Not Global Warming or Wi-Fi: Combination of Pesticides and Fungicides Contaminating Bee Pollen

A new study, however, points out that what has been decimating bees in the US is very familiar to our daily lives and is much more difficult to combat. Conducted by scientists at the University of Maryland and the US Department of Agriculture, he identified that a combination of pesticides and fungicides is contaminating bee pollen to feed the hives.
Researchers have found that bees contaminated with this mixture become much more vulnerable to a parasite infection called Nosema ceranae, which is a major contributor to CCDs identified at other times in history. The pollen analyzed in the study, collected from beehives off the west coast of the US, was contaminated with an average of nine pesticides and fungicides, although in one case the scientists found 21 different agricultural chemicals in just one sample.
Of these chemicals, about eight are associated with higher risks of bee infection by the parasite, according to the study. To be precise, contaminated pollen bees are three times more likely to be infected with Nosema ceranae.
According to the scientists responsible for the research, the findings shed new light on the discussion of pesticide and fungicide use, the interaction between them and the guidelines that should follow the labels of these substances, as the research also found that chemists are contaminating even species near where pesticides are being applied directly.
